The Apron Sink: Best Kitchen Sink
For Traditional Or Modern Designs

The apron sink often known as a farm sink hasn't been as popular in recent years as the more common undermount kitchen sinks. However, this type of sink has started to make a comeback and is being found in more and more kitchen design plans. If you want to look at what you can get in this type of sink, click here to see some of your options.

An Apron Sink is an Oversized Option

This type of sink is a bit different than some of the other common sinks and one difference you will notice is the size of the bowl or basin. The added size is gained by extending the sink front out to the face of the cabinets or slightly beyond. apron sink

This large size can be a big advantage for you if you often need to fill very large pots.

It's also good if you put a lot of dishes in the sink before you put them in the dishwasher.

Since the face of the sink is exposed, you can get sinks that have designs, sculpting, or textures on the face for a more decorative look.

If you are thinking about using one of these sinks in your new kitchen, remember that a standard sink base cabinet will not work.

You will need a base cabinet that is shorter then a standard cabinet to fit underneath the sink as shown the photo on this page.

No matter what your kitchen design plans are, you can find an apron sink that will fit in with your new space and your budget. Finding the perfect choice is made easy with the number of different material that you can get and the color options available.

When you decide to buy one of these sinks you'll have a lot to choose from. You can select from a stainless sink, Corian, soapstone, and even copper, just to name a few. Whatever material you choose, there will be pros and cons to consider.

Some of The Versions

Here are some things to think about when choosing the best apron sink for your kitchen:

  • A stainless steel version will be among the most affordable choices. Be sure to compare the thickness of the stainless in different models. Thicker material will be more durable and less likely to dent or warp. Another thing to consider is that stainless will lose its sheen over time and will scratch.

  • The Corian version is a "man-made" material that is available in about 100 colors making it a perfect choice to blend with your kitchen interior design.

Corian sinks are easy to maintain and if they get scratched, the scratches can easily be removed with light sanding and/or buffing. Corian sinks will have a luster to them for those who are looking for this type of look rather than a matte finish.

  • The soapstone version is either carved and shaped from a thick soapstone slab with no joints or pieced together with slabs that create joints that require special attention. It is a very dense yet non-porous soft material making it stain-resistant.

Keep in mind that some soapstone is softer then others and may be subject to staining. The nice thing about soapstone is that it will last for a long time because it's very durable.

The main drawback is the limited color choices since it is a natural material and you can’t get a large selection of different colors. You can achieve a darker tone and a shiny look by wiping the sink with mineral oil on a regular basis.

  • The copper version is available for those who truly want a vintage look with a rustic farmhouse style. Copper kitchen sinks has been used for years and they add an elegant traditional appearance that's right for certain kitchen styles. You can find a copper sink in a few colors based on the type of copper used and you can also get them in a hammered, brushed or other finishes.

An apron sink will catch the eye of anyone who walks into your kitchen and can be a perfect centerpiece if you want the old farmhouse or traditional look. When you decide on one of these unique sinks for your new space, be sure to compare the material and color options available. This type of sink can be the perfect choice and will make a statement in the right kitchen style.
