Durable Bamboo Hardwood Floors: Eco-Friendly Choice In Kitchen Flooring
Bamboo hardwood floors are one of the hottest trends for kitchen flooring today. This eco-friendly option looks different then most common hardwood flooring and is admired for its simple beauty and warm color.
In centuries past, bamboo was used for medical purposes. As early as the 2nd century B.C. this material was used in strips as paper. This “miracle plant” is also a food source for many in Eastern countries. In Costa Rica, bamboo is sought after as one of the strongest building materials and is used to build over 1000 homes per year. Today, most bamboo is cut in China.
Why Use Bamboo Hardwood Floors?
There are many benefits to using bamboo hardwood floors. Sometimes growing nearly 2 inches per hour, this material can be harvested in 3-5 years, at mature heights up to 50 feet tall. After it is cut down, it will grow back from the same plant! By contrast, other more common types of trees, like oak for instance, takes 10 to 50 years to grow, and must be replanted for the growing cycle to begin again.
Bamboo is harder than red oak or maple. It is very dense and can take a harder impact without denting. It is also resists moisture, making bamboo hardwood floors a smart choice in areas of the home that take spills, like the kitchen. Bamboo has a very tight grain that displays a more uniform color throughout. Its unique pattern created by the “nodes” on the reed, make it very pleasing to the eye. Bamboo cannot be stained in a lot of finishes, as it will not take the color evenly in most cases. It often comes solid and pre-finished in attractive colors. Different Ways This Floor is MadeThere are several choices of plank construction for bamboo hardwood floors: Vertical or horizontal solid construction, strand-woven or engineered bamboo. Vertical and Horizontal: Vertical and horizontal bamboo flooring is solid and refers to the direction in which the material is glued and pressed together under high pressure. - Vertical construction orients the strands of bamboo on their edge, standing thinner sections of bamboo together before finishing them. The surface of the boards shows the edges or narrow side of the bamboo. This results in a more uniform look as the growth rings do not show.
- Horizontal construction has the wider face of the bamboo slats facing up next to one another on the finished boards. This shows more of the look of the growth rings when installed as seen in the photo on this page.
Strand Woven: Strand woven bamboo hardwood flooring makes the strongest of your choices. Shredded fibers and strands are blended with a glue and then placed under intense pressure. It is then milled into boards that are more like a typical hardwood. A combo of the lighter and darker strands can be used to make a "tiger striping" if you want a more unique kitchen floor design.
Engineered: Engineered bamboo floors are strips that have been heated, woven together, and then laminated to plywood backing under extreme pressure. This version is stronger then those described above.
Planks are created that will fit together in a tongue and groove style which makes it easy to install. While lending itself more to
contemporary kitchen design,
bamboo finds itself at home with more traditional styles as well. It can be produced with a more distressed and rustic finish, or sleek and smooth.
