Ceramic Tile Kitchen Countertops

by Karen
(Olverland Park, KS USA)

We wanted to have a ceramic tile kitchen countertops after deciding that this was in our budget. We also wanted to do the work to save money.

I used 1/2" cement backer board over 3/4" exterior plywood as the base for the tiles. We screwed all of the surface down securely.

I spread tile mastic with a 1/4" notch trowel. Then added 6" x 6" Italian ceramic tile diagonal with 1/8" spaces between tiles as a grout joint. We did this on both the kitchen counter tops and the kitchen backsplash.

I then grouted the tile and sealed the grout joints with a silicone sealer. We finished off the front edge of the counter top with Victorian chair rail painted black.

We have used our kitchen counter tops for 5 years with no problems and only normal cleaning. For kitchen counter tops that are relatively inexpensive, they really turned out great and we are very happy with them!
