Copper Backsplash: Kitchen Backsplash
Designs Add Warmth To Your Kitchen

copper backsplash A copper backsplash adds an entirely different and stunning look to any kitchen. This type of backsplash provides a warm appearance that works well if you're looking to create a rustic style such as French country kitchens portray.

However, a copper backsplash also has its place in contemporary kitchen design as shown in the photo on this page.

The finish on these tiles can help a smaller kitchen appear larger with its subtle reflective qualities.

Copper even has traits that actually kill bacteria making its use in the kitchen safer, especially if you use it on kitchen counter tops or as a copper kitchen sink.

Copper kitchen sinks and faucets are gaining in popularity as well as some new kitchen gadgets. You can even get some copper major kitchen appliances but they are limited and very expensive.

Some folks are even completing a classic look in there kitchen with matching ceiling tile. If this is something of interest to you, using a copper backsplash will work perfectly with your matching ceiling tile.

If you are highlighting the backsplash area because of copper ceiling tiles, the best appearance is to stay with a similar look as the ceiling, in a smaller copper backsplash tile.

Imitation or Real Copper Tile Backsplash

You may want to choose copper plated, powder coated, or spray painted aluminum tile for the look you're after. There are plastic versions of copper too. These choices will certainly save money, but the look and feel of the real material is hard to beat.

Solid copper is much more desirable than the imitation type because the finish won't wear off with time, and it adds more value to your home. Gentle rubbing and proper cleaning won't chip or damage the finish of real copper. It is a product that will simply endure for many years.

The tiles for a copper backsplash come in many different sizes with embossed designs to fit every taste. The most popular way to install these tiles is in straightforward rows that run parallel with the top of the counters.

Tiles or Sheeting

You can place copper tiles in a ceramic tile backsplash or every so often in a glass tile backsplash if you don't want them to become too overpowering.

The thickness of copper tiles are similar to that of other tiles so the faces of various tiles match up nicely.

Of course, if you are using copper tiles and mixing them with other kinds of tile, make sure the tile setter that you employ has had experience with this material.

The installer should be very careful when grouting for this can damage the finish with scratches. They should always use masking tape to cover the fronts to prevent damage.

If you decide to go with copper sheeting instead of tiles, you will want to be aware of a couple of things. If you are hiring someone to do the installation of sheeting, you should consult with a tinning contractor, a trim carpenter or a company that specializes in this type of work. A tile setter is usually not equipped to do copper sheet goods.

Ease of Care

Look at the the manufacturer's guidelines on taking care of your copper tiles. Some tiles come with no protective coating, while others have a lacquered finish for protection. The lacquered finish will last for many years with simple care. It will also seal the copper to reduce tarnishing from the air and splashes of water or other liquids.

Some of the things to be aware of when cleaning a copper backsplash are:

  • Use a mild soap and soft damp cloth to clean it.

  • Abrasive pad can scratch it.

  • Never scrub too hard as you might etch the finish.

  • Harsh abrasive cleaners, questionable chemicals, or acetone shouldn't be used because it will strip off the lacquer finish.

A copper backslash can work with traditional as well as contemporary kitchen design, however, a stainless steel backsplash may be more in keeping with modern kitchen designs.

The largest downside of this material is its price, being rather expensive no matter what form you use it in. Use it to compliment certain kitchen styles and have a dramatic and warm appearance that everyone will notice.
