Quaint Cottage Kitchens: Enjoy
Simple Living In An Easy Style

cottage kitchens When you think of cottage kitchens you conjure up an image of a simple lifestyle. A cottage is a warm and inviting space that's easy to relax in. Picture a home by a lake, a beach, or maybe in the countryside.

One you can spend time in without worries. A place that has a style all of its own and doesn't follow any set rules.

Cottage kitchens look to create a functional space that doesn't rely on a lot of decoration. The key is to have a room that looks like it was pieced together with a variety of materials.

You may not need a designer for this casual and relaxed style, but if you do want help, check out Angie's List. You'll find a valuable resource to help you hire the right people to get your room done the way you want it!

Cottage Kitchens Combine Styles

Use kitchen styles and pieces from eras that you truly enjoy. For example, if you have a home that has an original kitchen, you may really love the cabinets and want to keep them.

Keep in mind that with this style, you can do that. Having unfinished cabinets is even an option. Cabinets that are older will fit perfectly with modern appliances or new flooring.

Consider painting your old worn cabinets that function properly and add new cabinet hardware and a simple backsplash. On the other hand, if perhaps you would like to replace your cabinets and love the look of white cabinets, replace them but leave a different aspect of the room intact. Many times you will find white cabinets with older flooring.

It really is about what you like and combining styles to get a cottage look. Examples of finishes to consider include hickory hardwood floors, for their unique grain, an apron sink, and wood counter tops. If you like the look of distressed cabinets, you can use those too. Essentially, you use what you like.

Colors to Consider

The colors for this style are based on what you like as well. If you want to create a bright and cheery kitchen, use bright colors.

If you want something earthy, use earth tones like gray-blues, browns and olives. The key is to choose your palate properly and stay within that, meaning don’t place a bright red antique refrigerator next to an olive-green cabinet.

A great old look that you'll find with cottage style is the use of subway tile. This type of tile was first used in bathrooms but this material has made its way into today’s kitchens. Especially so in cottage kitchens where anything goes.

Use interesting tile backsplash ideas that are a bit out of the norm. Consider a checkerboard design or a band of tile in the center that alternate colors.

Bead Board Goes With Cottage Kitchens

Another great look that can be found in cottage kitchens is bead board. Bead board, also referred to as wainscoting, will create a more country, relaxed feel to the space. It is paneling with vertical groves every couple of inches and can be placed anywhere and everywhere you want it.

One option is to use it on the bottom 32" of the walls and add a chair rail. Another idea, if you really like the look, is to bring it to just below the height of window and door trim. You can use it on the face or end panels of cabinets. Again, your preference is what matters.

This type of cottage look is designed to be a relaxing place you sit in the morning reading your paper and having coffee. Be sure to include space for a small table, island seating, or even a built-in bench in a corner kitchen nook.

Let Your Personality Show

Take time to decorate with family pictures or eclectic pieces of art and bring grandma’s old hutch out to showcase. Use pieces of furniture that you wouldn't expect to see in the room for added style. Including things that represent your personal lifestyle is a nice touch.

This truly is a style that is meant to reflect your personality. Remember that this cottage style has really no restrictions. Anything that makes you think comfort and relaxation will be perfect!

If you want your kitchen to turn out with an interesting casual style but are not sure if you can pull it together, then consider having a kitchen or interior designer help you. It may be one of the best investments you can make towards a kitchen that brings total satisfaction to you and your family.
