Hickory hardwood floors come in a different grades, as do other hardwoods. The color range is more distinct in the lower grades of hickory.

It ranges from almost white to the deep reddish brown heartwood. The lower grades of hickory flooring also feature "flaws" such as pockmarks and wormholes.


Grades of Hickory Hardwood Floors

  • Select: A grade with the least amount of color range as compared with lower grades, however, there will be some of the browns included with this grade.

  • #1 Common: This grade shows a combo of the heartwood and sapwood that enhances the character of the room. It often includes marks, knots and streaks.

  • #2 Common: This is similar to #1 common but it will show even more range in the color of the wood planks.

  • #3 Common: This grade has the most diverse look to it. The lesser grades are mixed in with the higher grades for a more rustic look.


Durable Choice

Because of it hardness, hickory can be a great, durable choice if you have children and/or pets. It will stand up to a lot of use and abuse since it will not easily dent or scratch.

The lower grades of hickory flooring have a more rustic look. They are well suited for cottage kitchens, country kitchen design and other similar rustic kitchen styles.

The higher grades of hickory flooring are better for a more elegant look, however, the range of color of the wood planks needs to be something that you truly like and will continue to like for many years to come.

Hickory hardwood floors are an excellent choice for job finishing since it takes stain very well. It comes in board widths of 2 ¼" strips, and planks that range in size from 3" to 8" wide. The wider the planks, the more expensive the material is in most cases.

Narrower planks will make a small kitchen look larger and the wider planks will make a large kitchen appear like a more intimate space.
