When my husband and I were searching for our first home, we were sold on this particular house because of the magnificent kitchen skylights.

Unfortunately, after a couple of years, we realized the cheap, white laminate kitchen counter tops were keeping the kitchen from reaching its full potential.

Our new stainless steel appliances required an equally attractive surface be applied to the kitchen counter tops.

Based upon our previous experiences with laminate counter tops, which are not only generally hideous in appearance, but easily become scratched and damaged, we were fairly certain we wanted a stronger material.

After looking at several materials, we chose quartz countertops, which does not have to be sealed yearly like kitchen granite countertops do. Finding a color to coordinate with our existing cabinets, and the new copper backsplash we planned to install, proved relatively easy.

Price was not a consideration, as the costs was very similar between granite and quartz countertops we chose. It's a virtually scratch-proof, stain-resistant surface making it an ideal material for kitchen countertops.

Additionally, the non-porous quality of quartz makes it less likely to harbor dangerous viruses and bacteria, as compared to porous granite. Quartz countertops require no periodic maintenance or special cleaners, only regular wipe-downs with a wet cloth.

Our counter tops have retained the same lustrous shine since day one. We were cautioned not to place hot objects or boiling liquids directly on the counter, but this has not been an issue, because I use hot pads and towels anyway to protect the surface.

As an aside, I must admit that my life-long hobby of rock collecting may have played a small role in my decision. Every time I look closely at my counter, I discover something new.

For the low maintenance, beauty, durability, and investment value, I feel confident that we made the right choice in our selection of quartz countertops.
